Holidays Around the World

Throughout the month of December, your first graders traveled around the world on Mrs. Gouzie's private plane.  We have traveled to Mexico, Israel, Germany, Australia and back to the United States.  We mapped out each journey on our large world map in the classroom and our globe, talking about the direction we would be traveling and which oceans, countries and continents we would be flying over on each adventure.

When landing in each country, we consulted our travel guides and learned about the special holiday customs and traditions of each country.  We discovered that many of our own customs and traditions originated in other parts of the world, especially in Europe.   The custom of baking and decorating gingerbread cookies and gingerbread houses is a big part of German culture.  The menorah is an important part of Hannakuh celebrations in Israel and around the world.  We learned that the pointsettia is a plant that a former ambassador brought back from Mexico to South Carolina and is now seen throughout the United States.  We also learned that in Australia Christmas is celebrated during the summer, so many families celebrate the holiday by having a picnic at the beach.

Along the way we enjoyed learning about the unique customs and traditions of people around the world.  I hope this world wide exploration has taught your first graders some important mapping skills, while helping them gain a better understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity.

Wishing you all Happy Holidays
and all the best in the New Year!

Mystery Reader

Special thanks to Mike Linehan for being our
Mystery Guest Reader last Friday.
Mr. Linehan read a favorite holiday classic,
The Night Before Christmas.
He also had time for a second story,
There was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Bell!,
which the children enjoyed reading altogether!

Turkey Trouble

Help! Thanksgiving is almost here and the turkey is in big trouble.  After listening to the story, Turkey Trouble, we worked together to disguise the turkey to keep him safe.

Then we shared ideas while brainstorming, and worked collaboratively on this shared writing project.
Click on the picture below to view our turkey disguise.
Then click on the arrow to turn the page to read our story.

Thanks to Mrs. Klipfel for sharing this fun
writing project with us!
Wishing you all a Happy Thanksgiving!
I am truly thankful to be able to come to school each day and work with your lovely children.
Their smiles and hugs brighten my day, and
I love how they work as a team.
I am so grateful for all of your support.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Kathleen Gouzie

Build-A-Bear Chair Challenge!

Are you looking for a fun family activity?
How about trying the Build-A-Bear Chair Challenge at home with your family?

Your stuffed animal is uncomfortable! Can you design and build a chair that makes him happy?
You and your teammates will build a chair that holds your stuffed animal.

Supplies Needed per group:
4 pieces of copy paper
6" masking tape
Stuffed animal - no smaller than a Beanie Baby

You must follow all rules.

You will have 3 minutes to formulate a plan. You will then have exactly 10 minutes to complete the challenge.
  • You may use as much or as little of the kit materials as you choose.
  • Your structure may be as tall or as wide as you would like.
  • You MAY NOT attach your structure to a base such as a table or the floor.
  • A successful chair holds your stuffed animal above the table, floor or another surface. Good Luck!
  • On Thursday, we took the Build-A-Bear Challenge at Steward School!

If you take the Build-A-Bear Chair Challenge at home with your family, I would love to hear from you to see how it went!
Comments are not posted immediately, but usually are posted within a few days.

Having Fun Shopping at Mrs. Gouzie's Halloween Store!

Lots of Spooktacular sales are going on this week at Mrs. Gouzie's Halloween store!
My favorite ghosts and goblins have been busy learning about money, and items are flying off the shelf and vanishing into thin air!
Suddenly, new Halloween treats have magically appeared in our store overnight!
We are brewing up some scary deals for our last day of shopping tomorrow!

Look who came down to our classroom today to join in our Halloween fun!
The children were delighted to have Mrs. Willa be a cashier at our store.
What a special treat!
